It’s fun to witness your loved ones walk down the aisle, but deciding what to wear can be a huge pain. You want to make sure you look your best, but you don’t want to upstage the bride. And vague dress codes can make selecting an outfit even more difficult. Luckily, there’s no need to freak out. If you’ve received an invite that has the words ‘semi-formal attire’ in calligraphy across the bottom, this resourceful guide will break down exactly what that means.

‘Semi-formal’ refers to ensembles that are more relaxed than black-tie requirements. “I approach semi-formal dressing knowing that it should still have a formal element,” celebrity stylist Lindsey Dupuis tells SELF. In addition to adhering to the bride and groom’s request, you’ll want to pay close attention to what time the wedding is scheduled. “If it’s during the day, lean towards lighter colors,” adds Dupuis, who has dressed Sharon Stone, Nikki Reed, and Brittany Snow. “And if the event is in the evening, opt for darker tones.” Here are five more rules to help guide your semi-formal outfit selection.

1. Try to avoid going too long or too short. “Miniskirts and floor-length gowns are off limits,” says Dupuis. Semi-formal is all about finding that happy medium. “If you fancy wearing a maxi dress, just make sure the fabric isn’t too dressy,” the fashion expert says. Remember: You want to feel dressed up, but this isn’t the time to whip out that ballroom gown you’ve been saving.

2. And you shouldn’t even think about wearing white. Unless you were specifically instructed to show up in an ivory hue, don’t do it. Dupuis says, “It’s all about the bride, and it is her time to shine bright in white.” It’s also a good idea to find out what color the bridesmaids will be wearing, so you won’t be mistaken for a member of the wedding party.

3. If you have more than one semi-formal ceremony on your calendar this season, don’t be afraid to repeat a look. Even the Duchess of Cambridge Kate Middleton does it. “I always suggest switching up the way you wear your accessories or adding a fun new layer,” says Dupuis. You’d be surprised how adding a silk scarf or substituting stilettos for wedges can drastically transform a dress.

4. Don’t overdo it with accessories. Dupuis shared the number one styling rule that she never breaks: over-accessorizing. “If you sport a statement necklace, keep your other jewelry (including hair accessories) simple,” she says. “Let the statement piece speak for itself.”

5. And instead of running from store to store, you can turn to online shopping to finalize your purchase. “It’s so easy to get lost online, so have a vision for what you want before starting your search,” says Dupuis. The cocktail dresses and elevated separates sections are great places to begin your search. If you’re still feeling uneasy, Dupuis summed things up by saying, “When in doubt you can always count on an LBD (little black dress)!”

I posted a little sneak peek of this dress when I wore it in Hawaii, and I'm excited today to bring you the full tutorial on how you can make a custom off the shoulder dress for your next beach trip! Before we left on our family vacation to Hawaii last month, I was itching to sew an off the sleeve dress for a beach cover ups. There are so many adorable off the shoulder dresses for sale (this one and this one are my favorites), but I had some really pretty lightweight coral fabric in my stash that I wanted to use up. I came across this dress online and I knew I had to recreate it with my coral fabric.

The off the shoulder trend is one of my favorite trends this summer, because I feel like the clavicle and shoulders are such a pretty and classy way to show a little skin. Plus, you don't have to worry about getting tan lines if you wear it as a cover up to the pool and beach.

To style an off the shoulder dress, I would say skip the necklace, especially if you are wearing it as a swimsuit coverup. Throw on a simple pair of stud earrings intead, and pull your hair away from your face a bit. If you throw too much jewelry on it distracts from the silhouette of the dress. When it comes to resort wear, I really think something more simple, understated, and less styled ends up looking a lot more chic and timeless.

How to go about it? Simple. Follow our quick-fix guide to creating perfect brows:

Step 1:
Start off by brushing clean, dry brows upwards with a mascara-style brush or toothbrush to see if there are any gaps.

Step 2:
For professional looking brows, it's best to use tweezers which will give you controlled, precision shaping. But when dealing with a tricky ‘unibrow' or flyaway hairs, our go-to gadget is the Braun Face, using its high-precision, epilator-head attachment. It's 200 times faster and more thorough than tweezing, and lasts up to four weeks – plus it doubles as a sonic cleansing brush, too.

Step 3:
Next, fill in any gaps with a soft brow pencil or brow powder. Use a shade close to or slightly darker than your hair colour and apply the pencil in short dash-like strokes to mimic your natural hairs. 9 Essentials to Pack for Your Holiday Vacation

Traveling for the holidays can be tricky. We did it for so many years, and especially with kids it's hard to fit everything in plus gifts if you're bringing those along. So learning to pack the essentials that will keep you looking great over the holidays, cover you for all unexpected events that might arise, and keep your luggage small is super important.

Zappos is one of my go-to's for shopping because with their crazy fast shipping I can pick something out and have it on my doorstep the next day. Perfect for any last minute things you might need for your Christmas vacation!

Here are 9 essentials you should have in your suitcase for your holiday travel:

1. Two pairs of versatile pants. I chose my two-toned leather leggings for women and a dark wash pair of jeans. They'll go with everything and both of them can easily be dressed up or dressed down.

2. A pretty poncho. Ponchos are huge this season and there are so many good ones to choose from. I picked this one up from Zappos and I love how it's basically just a fashionable blanket that's socially acceptable to wear around in public. It's easy to throw on over either your jeans or leggings, and perfect for going out, or just staying home and snuggling on the couch (both of which you'll probably be doing over your holiday break).

3. A couple of versatile tees. I chose a basic striped one, this oversized scoop hem tunic (that I'm wearing above), and a plain white tee (I'm obsessed with this one and it's only $8!). I chose pieces that are all in the same color family so they're easy to mix and match or layer under jackets or that poncho, and will make it easy to create a bunch of outfits while still keeping your suitcase really light.

4. Three pairs of shoes. I'm always an over-packer when it comes to shoes, so I've learned to choose pairs that can work for lots of different occasions. Choose one pair of nice flats that can be worn with both of your pants, one pair of ankle boots, and one pair of basic black heels. These three shoes will cover you for any and all occasions during your vacation.

5. Jammies and slippers. Since Christmas time has lots of occasions to relax and be in pajamas (Christmas eve, Christmas morning, and plenty of other times), bring along a pair of festive pj's and some cozy slippers to keep you snuggly and warm, and also cute for all those pictures that are sure to come. I'm obsessed with these Minnetonka slippers because they're so soft and warm, but don't make my feet hot because the back is open. I wear them all day long every day.

6. One coat. Choose a basic and versatile coat you can wear every day during your vacation (without it being obvious you're wearing the same coat). This simple black double-breasted wool pea coats for women is so classic and chic, but will also keep you toasty warm.

7. Two bags. Make them both neutral, and bring one casual one, and one dressy one.

8. One or two hats. I've become such a hat lover in the last year or so and never travel without one anymore. They're great for looking put together, keeping your head warm, or covering up dirty hair. My favorite is this gray fedora since it's the perfect size for every day, but if you're going somewhere really cold, make sure you also throw in a snow hat with a cute pom-pom on the top! Oh, and when you're packing a fedora, roll up a pair of jeans, stuff them inside the hat, and then set the hat at the bottom of your suitcase and pack around it. This will help it keeps its shape!

9. Little Black Dress. Since it's the holidays, I'm sure you'll have at least one nice place to go during your stay, so a LBD is a must. I chose one that's stretchy so it makes it feel more casual and it can be dressed up with your heels, or dressed down with your poncho, a hat, and your ankle boots.

5 Christmas Looks to Wear This Season

In case you haven’t yet had your overdose of Christmas I’ll give you one to fill your plate and stop all the fussing over the most dreaaaaaaaring question ever: What am I going to wear for Christmas this year? Parties, family dinners, home parties, film nights, painting the town etc. covered. Am I a pal, or am I a pal?

In my tiny moments of lucidity, when I’m down from my unicorn I do realise I don’t hold all the sartorial answers, but you know me, I like to delude myself once in a blue moon.

Anyway. So apparently it’s almost Christmas and that means 1) eating until I drop. Amen to that!, 2) family dinners, lunches, and what not. God help us! and 3) Playing dress up from one event to another. Yay. Oh, and drinking. Drinking puts everything into a whole new perspective. A better one. Every holiday is basically another excuse to pig out and get intoxicated with your poison of choice. Jack, Hennessy, love, wine, lust, music, hangovers, laziness, Jack. Yeah. I’ll stop now.

What to wear for Christmas in my case always came down to 3 style gimmicks: all-black, something with sequins, and red lips. One of the 3 or all always got me out of trouble. So I thought of sharing with you my little Christmas dressing up guide in case you too are a headless chicken a few hours before running out the door. Here we go.

1. SEQUINS. I know, groundbreaking innit? Anyway… what better time of the year to drape yourself in sequins and glitter and high shine than Christmas. Whether it’s a sequin dress, a pair of leggins or a skirt, rock it and sprnkle soe of that shit everythere. Glittler that is.

I love the sequin skirt and plain T-shirt of sweater combo. High heels and bold lips are perfect!

2. ALL-BLACK. Always gets us out of trouble and never looks dated, au contraire you’ll look polished. Some ignorants wearing reindeer sweaters and khaki pants might ask you why you’re wearing such a depressing colour, but don’t bother. Show them the mirror on the way out and maybe it’ll dawn on them.

3. FEMININE. I LOVE this approach especially when done with a 70s twist. A flowy knee length dress paired with over-the-knee-boots and a cozy cashmere cardigan on top, or a faux fur and long flowing locks and… shut the front door.

4. SOPHISTICATED. This is fashion lovers on a roll people. From prints to precious fabrics, from bold to mininmal combos it’s a heaven for whover loves to play dress up. Have fun with accessories, and dark lips, and leather, fur, sequins. A bit of everythng in the right amount and the right place and you’ll be one helluva fashion gal wherever the night takes you.

5. JEANS. Oh I bet you didn’t see this one coming. Well… it don’t all gotta be high fashion and shit, yet it can all look the part. Jeans can be anything they want to be: casual, cool, effortless, hot, you can dress them up with a silky top, a sequin blouse, a polished blazers, or just wear a very cozy sweater. Have fun with heels and makeup, and add your won spin on it depending on where you go.

I’m starting to fall for white jeans this season. Sigh.

If all else fails, we’ve got the red lips and big smiles to wear, and that ain’t so bad right? Also… when you’ve got loved ones and tones of food on the table, Wham going on about Last Christmas, who the hell cares what you’re wearing anyway? Seriously now.

Well… I do, but nobody cares what I think so we’re all safe.

8 Winter Trends to Last a Lifetime

How often do you get to say that about something huh? ‘A lifetime’, ‘forever’, ‘forever and ever’, with no panic attack and real chances of the ‘forever’ happening? Personally I am known for hoping beyond hope, so I’ll let you be your own judge, you can imagine what an idiot I am thinking my relationship with Fashion – 2016 winter trends to be more precise – will actually go beyond eternity, when in fact Fashion is the most neurotic and inconsistent bitch out there. And I ain’t a fucking saint myself.

Anyway… it’s the lucky and the stupid whose hopes die last.

When it comes to 2016 winter trends you can’t blame me though, there’ve been a few looks out there since what feels like forever and truth is it ain’t looking like they’re going anywhere any time soon. Errr hello cropped tops, who’ve started going out just recently with cropped jeans, hello a bob haircut, hello ankle boots, and flats… Seriously it’s a fun cyclical ride lately. And by lately I mean for the past 2 years or so. Some pieces that were labeled as trends have actually turned into staples so I’m not that crazy to call on a forever ring on Fashion. Especially with these 8 winter looks that are 1). Everywhere, and 2). Not going anywhere.

1. LONG COATS FOR WOMEN. Been there done that. It’s dramatic, it’s hobo-chic, it’s comfy, cool, sophisticated. Any colour works, and it’s got a bit of that 90s meets 80s vibes. Keeper.

2. SNEAKERS. Truth is anything that has no heel is a winner these days, but sneakers are reigning for a very long time. Worn with anything, especially long coats they’re a guaranteed ticket to looking casual & chic.

3. ANKLE BOOTS. Mark my words: they will never go away, and Amen to that. From summer to winter, from casual to smart, from heels to flats they will forever be in style.

4. TURTLENECKS. Shut the front door.There is nothing more French than a massive turtleneck, hair tucked in, coat hanging off your shoulders… And everybody wants to look French so… OR, nothing will ever scream more sexy and retro chic than a tight turtleneck paired with high waisted flared jeans. Oh. My. God. Keepers.

5. CROPPED. From tops to jeans all is tinier and baring: midriffs and ankles. It’s so 90s and 70s it will hang around for quite a while I predict. Besides, it looks so geek-hot-cool-awkward-retro-trendy it’s bound to stick around for at least one more year. Bring the cropped sweaters in. Oh and them cropped jeans please.

6. NEUTRALS. What could possibly look better than an all-white look against an all-white town (aka street style pic)? I know, I know, I know. A nude look. A grey outfit. Anything pastel and unsaturated. Ladies and gents I give you the soft classy incredibly polished and ethereal winter trend – the neutrals. Keepers. Keepers. All the way.

7. BOYFRIENDS. Naww. Not the male pretty little faces tagging along our brilliant sartorial selves. Not those hot clean shaved or bearded, smart, and funny, and so so so so so very cool in every possible meaning of this shallow word. No. Not the men, but their clothes. Sigh. Don’t you feel like everything these days is men inspired? Shirts, button downs, jeans, blazers… it’s a size bigger and slouchier, and women love it. Keeper.

8. The BOB CUT. The most coveted, and most flattering cut on any and everybody, mortal or VIP. No, seriously.

And d’you know the best bit? It’s a a trend stretching out way way way into summer. Well except for the long coats, but even those we can trade for long trench-coats or vests. Huh?

The Bubble Nails Manicure Craze

Forget the stiletto nail – there is a new nail shape in town and it’s taking social media by storm. The look for your talons is the curved nail, hump nail or the bubble shaped nail. To achieve the look, your manicurist covers your nails with acrylic, building it up thick in the middle and allowing it to thin out, creating a curve in the nail.

The end result? Your nails look like the back of a turtle’s shell and apparently it’s the new hotness on the streets. A look on Instagram or Tumblr and you will find thousands of images of these curved nails, as well as plenty of memes from people wondering why it’s a thing in the first place. Sure – the bubble nail seems to be an acquired taste for some, but one woman’s fugly is the next woman’s fierce.
